Vitamin D found to help women with PCOS

Researchers from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China have found that vitamin D supplementation helps improve the follicular development and menstrual cycle regulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the most common female endocrine disorder.

The systematic review was published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice.

  • The researchers conducted a systematic review to examine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on patients with PCOS.
  • For the review, the researchers searched for randomized controlled trials published before December 2015 that compared the effect of vitamin D supplementation with placebo or metformin in PCOS patients.
  • Out of the 463 studies collected, only nine were included in the review, which involved 502 women with PCOS in total.
  • Based on the studies, vitamin D supplementation significantly improved follicular development and menstrual cycles in PCOS patients.

In conclusion, the findings of the randomized controlled trials reviewed suggested that supplementing with vitamin D may be helpful for follicular development and menstrual cycle in PCOS patients.
