The combined extracts of the reishi and Egyptian chlorella vulgaris shown to have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties

The reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) and Chlorella vulgaris are known as superfoods. In a study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, researchers sought to uncover the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and synergistic properties of the two.

  • Aqueous extracts from reishi (GLE) and C. vulgaris (CVE) were collected for testing. These were examined for their phytochemical content, as well as their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, synergistic, addictive, and antagonistic effects.
  • Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids, and trace minerals. Antioxidant capacity was also more potent when the extracts were combined than when used individually.
  • The researchers tested the anti-inflammatory properties of the extracts on lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in stimulated white blood cells. It was observed that the combination worked better than the individual extracts in suppressing inflammation. The extracts’ anti-inflammatory-dependent antioxidant effect was also significantly higher than that of standard anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone.

The outcomes led the researchers to conclude that the extracts were used better as a combination than individually because of synergistic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They were also effective as alternative treatments for conditions that arise from inflammation and oxidative stress.
